I am fascinated by how hard it is for people who have set out in a particular direction to change course. It takes a much greater effort of will to make changes to plans you have already laid than it did to come up with those same plans in the first place.
I have been battling with myself for the past week. A few photo samples are going to be delayed, a few actual deliveries are later than planned and each delay makes producing a summer catalogue less and less sensible.
I know that on balance it makes sense to accept that my plan to put together our first summer catalogue in just 4 months was over-ambitious. But, gosh, it’s hard to accept it and change plans accordingly.
And yes, that’s partly because our sales would increase with a summer catalogue and we will now have to wait for summer 2011 to benefit from that growth, but if I’m really honest the biggest problem is that I am having to alter the course I had committed to.
I’m sure I once read that the power of commitment is what makes smart people do dumb things. So, for once, I really am going to listen to my experience that is telling me to wait and ignore the little voice blindly saying: you said you would, so you should. In stead I am remembering that I will have more time with the kids and maybe even a little more time for gardening now that I have finally accepted that there will not be a Charlotte & Co. SS10 catalogue. Also, I can start work on SS11 now and make it bigger and better than SS10 was ever planned to be.
